Introducing: Kirk & Kirk Eyewear

Kirk & Kirk is a name that resonates with those who value high-quality, innovative eyewear. Operated by husband and wife team Jason and Karen Kirk, this British brand has carved out a niche in the world of luxury eyewear, combining a rich family heritage with a commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and technology.

Karen and Jason Kirk

In 1919, Jason Kirk's grandfather, Sidney, and great-uncle, Percy, founded Kirk Brothers, by ingeniously converting a dilapidated sewing machine into an optical lens cutter. From their London base, Sidney and Percy were trailblazers, becoming the first to deliver lenses by motorcycle courier—a thoroughly modern approach for the time. They went on to pioneer optical advancements on a global scale, establishing factories in Indianapolis, Montreal, and Johannesburg, all while infusing the world of optics with their distinct sense of style and excitement.

Sidney Kirk was the inventor and craftsman of the family. Percy, on the other hand, was the promoter and salesman, creating advertising images and slogans that the entire optical profession could use to communicate their services. He compiled books of marketing and promotional tools, which were generously shared with opticians to help elevate the industry as a whole. The brothers were exceptionally close. They married two sisters, Miriam and Sarah, bought houses next door to each other, and even purchased identical cars with consecutive number plates.

It was only natural that the next generation, including Jason’s father, Neville, would follow in their footsteps, continuing the family’s legacy in optics. They were inventors and pioneers, always striving to advance the field. In their London offices, they sold frames and lenses on the ground floor and meticulously crafted them on the upper levels, overseeing the entire process from start to finish. Innovations included the "Facifit" spectacles - the first frames to have adjustable nose pads.

The Kirk bothers' exceptional products and marketing know-how soon had the leading figures of the day wearing their frames. One of their inventions was "Motex" safety glass, which Sir Malcolm Campbell wore in his goggles when setting the world water speed record of 129.5 mph in 1937.

After his achievement, Sir Malcolm sent the brothers a simple telegram: “Achieved record today. Goggles excellent.”

In 2013, almost a century after the original family business was founded, Jason and Karen Kirk launched Kirk & Kirk with the goal of creating eyewear that stands out not just for its design, but also for its materials and craftsmanship. The brand quickly became known for its bold, colourful frames, which are handcrafted in France using high-quality acrylic. Unlike many other eyewear brands that rely on acetate, Kirk & Kirk’s use of acrylic allows them to create frames that are both lightweight and durable, with a distinctive finish that enhances the vibrancy of their colours.

The brand is unafraid to experiment with colour and shape, creating frames that are as much a statement piece as they are functional. Each frame is designed to be comfortable and lightweight, ensuring that wearers not only look good but also feel good.
