Automotive Art by Ella Freire

New to Mason & Sons' Automotive Art offering, Ella Freire is a London-based artist specialising in the medium of screenprinting with a focus on classic cars. Her work is purposefully simple and refined, and therefore allows the cars and their architectural lines and bodywork to do all the talking.

Whether you’re a collector or a dreamer, you’ll easily be able to find and recognise the simplified beauty of Ella’s work which is purposefully minimal. “They allow the cars to do the talking,” she tells Mason & Sons. And quite right, too, for classic cars are sterling examples of the finest feats of engineering the humanity has ever been graced with. To then overdesign or complicate a homage of them would be a disservice in many ways and an act that would probably have Ferdinand Porsche turning in his grave.

Based in leafy Wimbledon in south-west London, Ella studied art at Eastbourne College of Art & Design before embarking on a long career in interior design. While architecture and ephemera from the 20th century and beyond has always been a keen interest of hers, cars have been firmly positioned in the passenger’s seat. Her father collected, her brothers too, yet she cites visiting her grandfather and seeing his 1930s Bugatti, which he used to race at Brooklands, as being the start of her fascination with classic cars. “Whenever we used to go and visit him he would always be in his driving overalls,” she adds.

Produced in limited edition runs of 10 with up to individual 8 colours that are matched perfectly with the specific muse, Ella’s pared-back work highlights the sweeping architectural lines of each marque’s acclaimed creation. While Ella is always happy to receive commissions (lead time is 8-10 weeks), we’ve started with a few out our favourites such as the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (read our Intelligence entry on that, here), the Porsche Speedster 365 and the 1967 Jaguar E-Type. Finally, there’s even the Mini Coopers from The Italian Job. We couldn’t help ourselves...

Each individual work is printed on Hahnemühle 100% cotton rag paper, which does wonders in holding the inks natural vibrancy and sheen, before being framed in acrylic and backed on a tight aluminium seal for protection.

As mentioned, Ella is open to commissions so if you have something special in your garage and need a reminder of it, do contact us.
