1992 Porsche 964 Carrera RS

Model History:

The 964 was Porsche’s internal name for a version of the iconic 911 produced from 1989 to 1994. It featured substantial styling revisions from the 911 it replaced, particularly the bumpers which were far more integrated than before and was considered to be more than 85% new as compared to its predecessor, the Carrera 3.2.

Porsche launched a lightweight, sporty, rear-wheel-drive-only 964 variant at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show – dubbed the 964 Carrera RS, it was sold only in European markets between 1992 and 1994.

It had a tweaked version of the standard 964 rear-mounted 3.6-litre engine with increased power output to 256hp, lighter single mass flywheel, close-ratio transmission, asymmetrical limited slip diff and steel synchromesh. It also featured a lowered suspension system, with stiffer springs and shocks and adjustable stabilizer bars. Other stand-out features included unique 17-inch Cup-style magnesium alloy wheels, aluminium bonnet, and drilled brake rotors.

The interior was hugely different from the standard 964, with anything not essential stripped away to save weight. This meant that there was no electric windows, electric seats, air conditioning, power steering, cruise control or sound deadening, while door and rear window glass was thinner than normal. Standard front seats were replaced by racing-style bucket models, and rear seats were removed all together.

Towards the end of the production run European exclusive variant of the RS was also sold, with just 55 produced in total. The car featured a factory Turbo widebody and a bored 3.8 litre version of the M64 motor, which produced 296 bhp, which also became the basis for a more powerful competition version called the 3.8 RSR.

Exterior:

Leaving the factory as a 964 RS and finished in an optional shade of sensational Midnight Blue Metallic, this accident free RS was chosen as an excellent base for a 3.8 RS widebody build. With factory Porsche arch flares and genuine front and rear turbo bumpers the body work has been widened to an extremely high level and without affecting or removing the original fitment of the base 964 RS factory fitted panels.

The quality of the paintwork is second to none and presents in excellent condition; retaining a deep shine, the metallic shade is a superb colour that drapes over the huge arches and purposeful silhouette. Protecting the time, effort and cost invested into the body is a full coat of PPF to ensure it remains free from any blemishes.

Underneath is corrosion free and in incredible condition as you would expect from the high quality of cars that originate from Japan.

Interior:

Upon entering the cabin of the RS it becomes apparent that this is no ordinary 911. The deeply bolstered hardback bucket seats are upholstered black leather with graduating blue inserts, with tonal blue seatbelts and lightweight doorpulls complimenting the exterior and as per its factory build. The minimalist approach continues throughout the car; with manual windows and red embroidered RS lightweight carpets in place of the rear seats.

A modern Pioneer head unit has been added to the car, with integrated Bluetooth and Aux inputs, aiming to introduce some practicality into an otherwise entirely driver focused space.

Engine & Transmission:

The original matching number air-cooled flat-six and gearbox still remain in the RS, however whilst in Japan it was converted to 3.8 RS spec, bored to an increased output of 3.9L running a motec management system and throttle bodies. Dyno print outs show a current output of 358bhp, an increase of almost 100bhp over the standard 3.6 unit. Paired to a 5-Speed manual gearbox the new found power creates an incredibly responsive, involving driving experience.

The sound track is complementary of a full inconel exhaust system including the headers, a work of art in itself and providing an incredible noise.

With a comprehensive Japanese service history and most recently a service with marque specialists, less than 200 miles ago, the mechanical condition of the car is superb.

Wheels, Tyres & Brakes:

A set of 18″ Speedline split-rims complete the iconic RS aesthetic and present in good order, free from any signs of curbing. The alloys are shod in a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sports, each with ample of tread left.

Between the spokes show the trademark red callipers and ventilated discs, Uprated both on the front and back with OEM equipment to match the increase in engine performance.

History File:

Supplied new to Japan, this 964 RS enjoyed regular servicing/maintenance throughout its life as detailed by a comprehensive log of Japanese service invoices present with the vehicle.

The car was exported to the UK in 2016 by renowned and expert Porsche specialists and is now UK registered with all taxes and duties paid. The car was last serviced by on 28/05/20 at 72,179 miles, as shown by the service book, where it was given a clean bill of health and has covered less than 200 miles since.

Present in the cars history file is the original leather document holder, a huge amount of Japanese service invoices, a service book, V5 and 2 sets of keys.
