The car in question here was built new on 1st June 1967. It was sold new at Redlands Ford to its first owner, Les Davidson, just 5 days later on 6th June 1967. Les kept the car for 50 years until 2017 when he sold it to a UK based collected who imported the car and UK registered it and has owned it ever since, making this a two owner car from new!

As with the original 1967 Shelby GT500s, this car too was built at the San Jose plant to S code 390GT + 4 speed specification. Accompanying the car is a stack of history, the Deluxe Marti report, photos and more.

The car’s Marti report states the car was built as follows:

  • 1967
  • San Jose built
  • S code 390-4V (big block 390 cubic inch V8)
  • Fastback
  • Lime Gold Paint
  • Ivy Golf Décor Bucket Seats
  • 3.00 standard axle ratio
  • Four-Speed Manual Transmission (Toploader)
  • GT Equipment Group
  • White Sidewall Tires
  • Console
  • Deluxe Steering Wheel
  • Sport Deck Rear Seat
  • Power Steering
  • Air Conditioner - Selectaire
  • Exterior Decor Group
  • Interior Decor Group
  • Tinted Glass
  • Deluxe Seat Belts

All in all, being a factory Air Conditioning, factory 390GT 4 speed, this was already a rare car, but the Marti report also states this car is quite literally the only Fastback ever built in this exact spec - we’ve never seen this before with any of the other Mustangs we have ever sold.

First owner, Les, put 60,000 miles on the car in period and then put the car into storage. In 2012, Les set about having the car totally restored as a Shelby GT500 tribute. A full frame off restoration was done to the highest of standards and as many genuine, original Shelby parts as possible were used to turn this S code into a GT500 clone. These included a new old stock, factory Shelby steering wheel that was purchased at an eye watering price of $6,000 and remains fitted to the car today.

The engine in the car is matching numbers and was fully rebuilt and rebored .30 over stock and fitted with 428 Dual Carburettors and accessories. The rear tail was signed by Carroll Shelby himself and then clear coated. The car has fitted the Shelby roll bar with harness, original Shelby dash, oil pain, valve covers. All original Shelby exterior trim and, unlike most other Shelby clones, even the side brake ducts are fully functional for brake cooling - just like the original GT500s.

In a write up we have from Les himself, that accompanies the car, the vehicle “has never been in any kind of accident and you cannot tell this car is not an original Shelby - every single detail was considered”. He’s not wrong!

Les also had a discrete $5,000 stereo system fitted with a hidden Bluetooth head unit, amplified speakers and a subtly installed subwoofer in the boot.

The car has covered just 8,000 miles since the restoration and is practically as it was when restored both up top and underneath. The underside is the best we have ever seen, no patch work quilt like many others, and the chassis has been correctly painted in Red Oxide, and not body colour nor has it been slapped with cover-up underseal.

Since arriving to the UK, the car has had regular maintenance and servicing carried out (all documented) and has been pampered, only having been drive in fair weather, as is testament to the underside. In short the car wants for nothing.
