Test drive: Motoluxe summer sport coats

In the early 1900s, winter motorists wore Motoluxe Alpaca "Teddy Bear" coats to keep warm - turning to cotton and linen during the summer months. Following a long period of hibernation, the Motoluxe brand was reawakened in 2017, and the teddy bear coat was brought back to life together with an extended family of unstructured Baby Alpaca sport coats.

The principal objective of the Motoluxe brand is to produce clothing of unparalleled comfort, style and practicality, using technical-weave fabrics that incorporate natural performance fibres - namely alpaca, cotton, linen and silk.

Motoluxe sport coats are cut to offer freedom of movement, and made without shoulder or sleeve-head padding, chest or body canvas, with the absolute minimum of lining fabric. They are the sartorial equivalent of a stripped-out racing car, influenced by the design philosophy of legendary Lotus Cars founder, Sir Colin Chapman… “Simplify, then add lightness”.

This season’s fabrics include a pure cotton three-dimensional stretch-jersey for maximum manoeuvrability, an open weave gauze in a blend of linen and silk which is breathable, textured yet refined, and a checked linen bouclé with an element of microfibre to improve crease resistance.

The sport coats are individually cut and made to the customer’s specification, creating the look of a bespoke blazer with the comfort of a cardigan, and remain true to the founding principles of the brand, being perfect for travel “by land, at sea or in the air”… from a long journey to a stroll around the garden.
