Mason & Sons Selects: Summer Shades!

This is the first entry in our series ‘Mason & Sons Selects’, whereby a handful of the staffers – all of whom are menswear enthusiasts of the highest degree – get the opportunity to wax lyrical about a specific product they’re currently wearing (or wish they were wearing). So, with the world upside down, we hope it provides you with a little insight into our personal tastes and interests.

The beaming sunshine that we're all seem to be experiencing right now is a small but significant antidote to the situation we're all in. As such, it's a fitting reason to kick things off here with our current favourite Curry & Paxton sunglasses that we hope to make these strange times a bit more enjoyable.

Given that they are the first thing that I put on in the morning, and the last thing I remove at night, I literally feel naked without my Curry & Paxton “Freddie” optical frames in Champagne acetate. Now that the sun is shining, I can add another layer - with the Grey tinted Clip-on shades (when I am wearing cooler tones of blue, grey and white) or the Brown tinted Clip-on shades (for warmer tones of beige, camel and taupe).

‘Always look on the bright side of life’... The lyrics of Monty Python seem more relevant than ever, particularly now that the sun is out in London. This summer, I have opted for the Dark Tortoiseshell Paul sunglasses. As soon as Curry & Paxton's centenary collection dropped, I was drawn to them. The frames immediately reminded me of one of the most iconic images of Paul Newman at the 1963 Civil Rights March. The photo could have been taken yesterday and eyewear in hand like this has not lost its cool.

The heat of summer fast approaches and with it a time to look towards days spent driving a convertible along the coast, tanning on the beach as you read a guilty pleasure, or gorging on a barbecue with friends. Sunglasses are de rigueur for all of those pursuits, but sometimes you need a go-to pair to wear no matter the occasion. I’ve been wearing the Alex from Curry & Paxton, a timeless round frame in warm caramel, and have found them to be equally poised with pastel chambray shirts and sun-bleached chinos, as well as my tropical suits and zephyr cotton shirts (which I greatly look forward to wearing again soon!).

No accessory or article of clothing has more visual prominence than sunglasses. As such, it pays dividends to really consider what you’re going be placing on your nose. The Yvan model is a new style for me to try but I’ve been wearing them a fair bit during this lockdown period. Given that it feels like an eternity then, I think that it's more than enough time to come to a conclusion on whether they suit me or not. I’ve always been picky with eyewear, but the slim profile with its masculine shape and softly-balanced curves make it a sure-fire winner for me. Oh, it’s got a pretty cool backstory, too.
